No one had cleaned for company. The cake came from a paper bag. Still, when the denim placemats and rose coasters reached the table, the afternoon found its occasion.
A visit without preparation
An old friend called from the corner and arrived five minutes later. There was no time to make the room perfect, only enough to put on the kettle and lay out the dark denim pieces embroidered with a rose.
The contrast made two ordinary cups look intentional. Crumbs landed safely. Conversation moved from quick news to the things neither person had managed to say by message.
A table does not need a celebration; sometimes it creates one.
Keep a little ceremony nearby
After the door closed, the table remained set for two. It was a reminder that ceremony need not be saved for weekends. Sometimes Tuesday simply needs a flower, two cups and permission to last longer than planned.
